Pvc Pipe Boat Bunks
I have also seen bunks with just pvc pipe. you can drill a hole in the "bottom" part of the pipe where it would attach to the frame for a bolt and then drill a larger hole in the top to allow a bolt head to pass through. the only problem with this setup it that most pvc pipe is not very crush resistance.. Putting pvc on a trailer changes the situation a bit. it's no longer a 150+ lb kayak sitting stationary on a rack in your garage...now it's a 150+ lb kayak bouncing on the two bunks. the genius of your design is the simplicity...simply throw a crossmember on the trailer tongue and couple it with pvc.. Pvc pipe is so cheap, i would just buy both and try them both out. either will work fine, i'm pretty sure it's a personal preference based on your exact setup (clearances, etc). i have a ti so mine is a little different situation, but i used 1 1/4 pvc on purpose so if the boat sags, it rests on the trailer bed at the low spots, this may not.
Would replacing the wooden bunks with 3 inch pvc pipes be a bad idea? i have been looking for threads about doing that and i have only found kayak owners doing it. nice red flag to this idea since kayaks are not heavy at all.. In 2010, i bought a hobie pro anger 14. because of the boat's heft and tendency for standard cradles or bunks to deform the hull, i cooked up the idea of using lengthwise pvc to conform to and yet. Place pipes into guide pipe brackets and slip any standard 2″ pvc pipe sleeve with 2″ pvc caps over the pipes; pvc pipe sleeves and pvc caps are not included; guide post brackets are not included and can be purchased separately.
